The Coussin de Lyon refers to a silk cushion in front of which stood a statue of the Virgin Mary. The story is set in the city of Lyon that is overlooked by a hill called the Fourvière hill, known as “the hill that prays”. In 1643, Lyon was devastated by a dreadful epidemic disease and in order to fight against it, aldermen of Lyon vowed to walk in procession to the Fourvière Hill and offer a wax candle of seven pounds and a gold sovereign on its silk cushion. Each year since then, the magistrates of Lyon have been renewing the aldermen's vows by walking up the Fourvière hill while three canon shots ring out in the city to announce that the vow has been respected. The silk cushion inspired the creation of the Coussin de Lyon. In 1960, some silk manufacturers in Lyon and the candy-maker Voisin worked together, the former devising a box evoking the historic silk cushion, the latter inventing a delicious specialty.
